Matthew B. Courtney

I am a senior at Eastern Kentucky University, with aspirations of becoming a musicologist. My research interests are widely varied, and include work in the fields of organology, socio/psycho musicology, and historical musicology with an emphasis on the music of the western church, and middle ages. I am widely versed in all aspects of musical history, including American popular music, world music, and jazz history.

As one of my primary research outlets in the field of organology, I write a monthly column in ME: Music News. This is a free press which spreads music news throughout Kentucky. My column, Intoxicating Instruments, describes various instruments in my ever growing collection. It discusses production methods, practical uses, and the mythology that surrounds the instruments.

One of my favorite rolls as a musician is that of critic and program annotator. I do a great deal of program annotation for various ensembles and solo performers at Eastern Kentucky University. I take the responsibility of program annotation very seriously. As the annotator, I provide the first impression of a work on the audience. I have been very fortunate to be able to work with composers and ensembles in annotating premiere works, including A Walt Whitman Portrait, Dr. Richard Crosby, and Aytz Chaim, Drew Shanefield.

I want to thank you for taking the time to browse my web page. Please feel free to explore the pages, and read my writing samples. I welcome any and all feedback!
