Picture Description
THE THEREMIN
The theremin was first built by Leon Theremin, in 1919. The theremin is an electronic instrument that is played by interrupting the electronic fields created by the two antennas. The vertical antenna controls the pitch, while the horizontal antenna controls the volume. The knobs on the front of the instrument control the timbre of the instrument.
THE DIDJERIDU
The didjeridu is an instrument played by the aboriginal people of Australia. This instrument is made from a hollowed out piece of eucalyptus. (Mine is made out of PVC) Didgeridoos are often painted with bright colors in traditional designs, like frogs, lizards, snakes, and “wandering paths.”
THE OCARINA
The ocarina is a clay instrument used throughout the world. This instrument was made famous by the video game “Zelda, The Ocarina of Time.” The ocarina is a whistle instrument, which is played by covering and uncovering the holes on top. There are two holes on the back that control the octave.
ANIMAL HORN TRUMPETS
Animal horn trumpets are used all over the world. In the jewish tradition they are called Shofars. Shofars are made from rams horns, or kudu horns. In other parts of the world, cow, antelope, and rams horns have been used as signaling devices, and for small rhythmic ensembles.
SHELL TRUMPETS
Shell trumpets have been used in nearly every part of the world. They are produced using the shells of large univalve gastropods, more commonly known as snails, that are found in the carribiean and the Pacific Ocean. They are used for several purposes, including religious ceremonies, singnaling, and rhythmic ensembles.
THE MUSICAL BOW
Musical bows are traditional Appalachian instruments, and were brought over from Africa by the slaves. They have been found in other parts of the world, including South and Latin America. A musical bow in this style is called a mouth bow, and uses your mouth as a resonance chamber to amplify the sound. Other forms may include seperate or attatched resonance chambers.
THE DULCIMER
The dulcimer is a traditional Appalachian instrument. It is a fretted instrument that is layed across the lap. They are unique in that in order to change keys, you must change the pitch of each of the strings to build the chord you want. They are typically tuned in DAD, DAA, or ACA format. Dulcimer players read specialized tablature instead of traditional music. A recent rise has occured in the popularity of the dulcimer sense the state of Kentucky made it the official instrument.
